Waterfront living in Reston

Reston is unique among Northern Virginia real estate offerings in that its four lakes offer a wide array of waterfront homes.

Recently, we helped a client purchase a Reston townhouse that fronted on Lake Thoreau.  The back side of the townhouse had walls of glass offering tranquil views of the lakefront — a unique setting so close to the city of Washington, DC.

The planned community of Reston has four lakes – Lake Thoreau, Lake Anne, Lake Newport, and Lake Audubon.  The town offers abundant opportunities for waterfront living.  Waterfront condos, townhouses, and single family homes are available.

In any community, water frontage or water views have value.  But in spending time with our client in her newly purchased home, we’ve discovered how important the lakes are to Reston’s social fabric.

Reston does not allow speedboats on its lakes, but does permit pontoon boats, deck boats, kayaks, canoes, and other boats with modest electric motors.  There’s no water skiing, but these slow-moving boats allow for plenty of social interaction among Reston waterfront neighbors. In the mornings, hearty Reston “regulars” can be seen doing their kayak workout while in the evenings, Reston homeowners raft up and socialize.

Lake Thoreau hosts regular concerts with bands playing on docks or floating barges.  Music lovers paddle up and socialize while enjoying the music.

The South Lakes shopping center fronts to the lake and includes waterfront restaurants such as Red’s Table.  Reston property owners can boat from their homes, enjoy a waterfront dinner, and boat back as the sun sets.

Lake Anne Village sits at the north end of Lake Anne and was the first community to be built in the planned town of Reston.  Popular restaurants in the village include the Lake Anne Brew House, Kalypso’s Sports Tavern, and Lake Anne Coffee.  For area residents, boating across Lake Anne for dinner or a cup of coffee is a special treat.

Many waterfront Reston condos are priced in the half-million dollar range.  Waterfront Reston townhomes vary from $1 to $1.5 million.  And Reston single family homes on the water can range from $2 to $3 million.  Reston waterfront homes don’t turn over very often, and at any given times there are typically a small handful of Reston waterfront homes on the market.
